    America's Next Top Riddler!

Post by Zekrif on Fri Jan 24, 2014 9:16 pm

Come one, come all to the hottest mind-juggling game of the year! Yes, you heard right, this is were riddles come to dance and frolic our minds! But first, let us go over a few things, shall we?

-There is only one Riddler at one point in time. The Riddler must, as the name suggests, give a riddle or two or three! Depending on the Riddler, ofc.
-The first to post a correct answer to a riddle becomes the new Riddler (If there is multiple riddles you only have to get one right.)
-If the current Riddler is idle and hasn't posted for more than 3 days his title is revoked and there will be a new Riddler.
-If a riddle proves too hard after a few days the Riddler must come up with a new one or give up his position to whom he/she chooses unless the people decide to continue on (To avoid clots and resulting in no one posting in this thread ever ever again)
-And lastly, be reasonable! Don't make it impossible! Give hints if you feel like it!
Remember, it can be about ANYTHING. Since I'm the OP I'll go first,
Riddle 1: "My neighbors think I'm a nosy old woman, but today I witnessed a murder. I was looking out my window when I saw something through the window of the apartment building opposite me. A man was in the middle of murdering a woman. The strange thing was, after he finished strangling her, he turned around and our eyes met. It was eerie. Then he pointed at me and kept staring at me for a minute or two. All the time he was staring at me, his finger kept moving. I called the police a few minutes ago and they told me I will have to go down to the police station and give a statement tomorrow. I'm sure they will catch him. I saw his face very clearly."

Riddle 2: "It's hard being a mother. I recently found out my son is psychic. He's got this habit of pointing at people's faces sometimes. My husband and I realized that whenever our son points at somebody like that, it means they're going to die within three days. Last year, he pointed at his grandfather. Three days later, his grandfather died of a heart attack. A few months ago he pointed to a picture of an actress in a magazine. Three days later, she was killed in a car accident. Today. When I went to turn on the TV, my son was pointing at the screen. When I turned it on the president was giving a speech. I can't believe the president is going to die, but my son is never wrong."

The son from riddle two is the culprit for riddle one?

The psychic in riddle two murdered the people he pointed at?

The TV dies, not the president?

The psychic was actually pointing at his mother, and she's the one that dies?

    Those are my current guesses.

Last is correct. Another answer could have been he was pointing at himself. Riddler what is your riddle?

I pass. I want to find out what happens in Riddle 1, and I don't feel like making or looking up a riddle.

There once was man as normal as you.
With daily chores and hobbies to
But one day he looked into the moon, oh how it cried blue
With clouded eyes and a faint black hue
Staring into the cold dark sky as he was born anew
As the moon glared it's sickly red blue.
    What is he?

Riddle: Queens can move horizontally, vertically and diagonally any number of spaces as illustrated. One piece 'attacks' another if it moves to the same tile that the other piece is on. How can you arrange eight queens on the board so they cannot attack each other?

Use this coordinate system to answer:

There are two possible answers, so you get extra awesome points if you can find both.

    Hint for the weary:
Four must go on black and 4 on white.

"You have two coconuts and you want to find out how high they can be dropped from a 100 story building before they break. But you only have $1.50 and the elevator costs a dime each time you ride it.

How can you drop the coconuts to guarantee you will find the lowest floor they will break at, while starting and ending at floor 1?

Note: They break when dropped from the same height and they don't weaken from getting dropped."

Oh man. I've heard this riddle before from my math teacher. To avoid slight unfairness I won't answer unless no one gets it.

Hmmm, I think I know how to figure it out, but it will take some time that I don't have right now. May post later if no one else does.

For some reason its not letting me delete this post. Apologies for the double post.

Well, with the money you have, that's only 15 elevator rides. Assuming the first floor doesn't cost any(cause you don't need the elevator), the best solution would be to test them in intervals. Test the first floor(if it breaks, you have your answer). If it doesn't, test the 15th floor. If it breaks, test the second coconut on all other floors between 1 and 15, giving you enough to also get back to the first floor once you've found it. If it doesn't continue testing floors 28, 40, 51, 61, 70, 78, 85, 91, 96, and 100, doing the same thing as floor 15. Again, these give you enough to get there, test the interval in between it's top and lower bounds, and one elevator ride down in the worst case scenario that its the last one you test.

Or you could just take the stairs...

Yeah, that's basically it. The numbers are *slightly* different, but it works anyways. Riddle away good sir~

Forgot to mention earlier, but I think I heard that riddle before. Fortunately I had forgotten the answer so I could actually solve it. You should probably use a different site for your riddles.

"You have been given the task of transporting 3,000 apples 1,000 miles from Appleland to Bananaville. Your truck can carry 1,000 apples at a time. Every time you travel a mile towards Bananaville you must pay a tax of 1 apple but you pay nothing when going in the other direction (towards Appleland).

What is highest number of apples you can get to Bananaville?"

Uh, you have no apples left? If you can only carry 1k and it's 1k miles long for the journey with an apple per mile you bring 0 back to Bananaville lol.

Nope, that's what I thought too when I looked at it. The answer is somewhat complicated~

    Time for another guess:
Since it's YOUR truck you don't actually pay the tax of an apple and you get 3000 back to Bananaville?
